Riot Updates in Hackney: carnivals, convictions, bins and business in N16 and beyond.

There were some pretty heartbreaking scenes unfolding in Hackney a fortnight ago, but thankfully it looks like - after plenty of policing, a strong response from the community and a big clean-up operation from locals and the Council - the riots in the borough and elsewhere have come to a speedy end, and things are back to normal in N16.
Figures for the end of last week showed that in Hackney 142 individuals suspected of being involved in the chaos had been arrested, 80 of which had already been charged, with others awaiting further enquiries this week. 52 warrants have been applied for since the investigations into Hackney's disorder began and CCTV is still being examined to uncover further suspects.
Hackney Council have announced that they are to consider evicting those convicted of offences during the riots, though it's a very controversial issue and no decisions have been reached yet. We will keep you posted.
As we all know, Hackney's Parks for Life Festival in Clissold Park was called off at the last minute owing to the threat of violence from rioters across the area. This has now been rescheduled for September 17th, which is great news for everyone involved.
And there has been mayhem on our streets after Stokey-ites were prevented from recycling at their own convenience, following the disorder. Joking aside, police requested Hackney Council remove many of the recycling banks and bins across the borough in order to avoid further fires and ease of access to glass implements etc that was seen throughout the rioting. These were initially intended to be replaced at the start of this week, but Council officials have now said that the Met would like them to remain off limits until after Notting Hill Carnival this Bank Holiday weekend.
Businesses were hit hard by the events, with many being forced to close their doors for the length of the disturbances. However, it looks like things are getting better for trade in the area. "Thank Turk it's Saturday" - organised to encourage locals to use the Turkish businesses between Stokey and Dalston the Saturday after the riots, as a gesture of gratitude for their efforts to defend the area - was a massive success, and the stretch of the High St near Shacklewell Lane was buzzing all day. Pubs and bars are also back on their horses: staff at the Alibi on Kingsland Road say that having been hit hard by the rioting and forced to close for three days, they are finally seeing a return to normality and are having their first busy week since reopening.
This is reiterated across the area by bars and venues, so it seems to be good news all round for trade, finally.
If you have anything to add relating to post-riot issues then please use the box below; but for now it looks like the only thing that stands to ruin this bank holiday weekend is the rain.
