South of SN, but it’s on lots of people’s ‘SN map’ because the old Vortex was on Church St. It hosts an enormous range of music, from Gypsy jazz, through standard jazz singing, big band jazz (despite its smallish capacity) to free jazz and the occasional bit of folk or rock. Check the website or the brochure (you can get on their e-mail list) to make sure it’s what you want to hear. It’s very friendly and quite an intimate atmosphere. But if you go, don’t talk over the music please!

ReportAn institution in N16. Vortex has been in Dalston, having moved from the site of the new Nandos, for a good few years now, and has really succeeded in doing the Jazz Club thing well. It's quite small, with lots of tables and big glass windows facing onto Gillett Square. They have a nice bar with friendly staff and decent prices, and the acts they get in are really good and pretty diverse. I love it here and would highly recommend anyone who likes a little bit of good music of an evening to check them out. A real asset to Hackney.
