Had a lot of fun at the weekend in The Lion, lovely bar staff, a wide range of drinks and good music. We are going to go back this weekend for seconds.

ReportDisappointingly average. There are so many pubs in the area that actually 'do' something, but The Lion is trying to be a proper Stokey pub while trying to be a trendy hoxton bar, and it's messing them both up in the process. I'm sure that it's a nice place to be to read the paper on a quiet afternoon but it's not the one for a night out.
What happened to this place?! It has such potential but it's really slipping. The last time I went in here there were a couple of girls behind the bar who were absolutely useless! One was wearing a trilby and a jacket while at work so I assumed she was dressed to leave - especially as there were three separate customers at the bar (the pub was pretty empty) waiting for a good few minutes before the girls stopped flirting with their mates and came over to serve us. The manager is a really grumpy Italian guy who just sits on the couch preening himself too. I mentioned this to a couple of other people in the area and they said they'd heard or experienced the same rubbish service there too. Hiring young, pretty women and a good looking manager is good business tactics, I'm sure; but they should also be good at their jobs.

ReportThe lion is new and upcoming if you like that kind of place it’s just for you. It’s stoke Newington all over and therefore attracts a very ‘trendy’ crowd. The staff have seemed delightful in the past although there has been a huge turn over in the last while. A lovely pub in general…
The Lion has a really nice games area upstairs with a pin ball machine, darts, table football and a pool table. There's a decorative piano. Comfy couches, nice crowd and a good layout. I didn't go outside but it looked nice. It's overpriced and impossible for parking.
Nice venue. The staff are friendly and there’s a good choice of alcohol. It’s a nice open space, but it does get rammed and that’s the only problem. There’s never any trouble in there. It does feel like Stokey when you’re inside – it feels like a nicer part of town! They’ve got a decent, big beer garden; good choice of music and some good entertainment. It is pricey but worth going to if you want somewhere clean, friendly and in a good location.

This place can get a bit too busy at times, but generally speaking I think it's the nicest pub on Chruch Street. Owned by Hugh and Caroline who own the Three Crowns and a couple of other places, it's changed a lot since the days of The Tup. Plenty on offer: garden in the summer, nice bathrooms, friendly hard working staff, big couches, pub quiz, pool, darts, table football, food, big scree for sport and fantastic music at other times. Only criticisms are the abundance of wonky tables, the overcrowding it suffers from most weekends and the fact it's not the cheapest place around.
