Pants pub with a mean owner. This place has a really nice beer garden, but beyond that I don't think it has any sense of its own culture and lacks an identity. Good location, and as I say the garden is nice in summer, but that's about it. Refurb is old fashioned.

I have no real strong opinions of this place despite having been in here many times over the years. None of the seating particularly appeals or makes for a friendly atmosphere. The staff are nice and there is a good beer garden, but nothing special.
Considering that it's situated at the top of my road, and is easily the closest drinking establishment to my house, it's surprising how long it took before I even set foot in The Daniel Defoe (known by some as the Defoy). But now, sensibly, it is very much my local. But it's not just proximity that makes my visits so consistent.
There's a good atmosphere. The barstaff are lovely (though they never seem to want to employ me...), there isn't loud music thumping about the place, and its a good place for a born and bred Stokeyite like myself to run into someone from the 'old crowd'.
Drinks prices are nowhere near ridiculous, and the beer garden's good for the summer times.

ReportWith some prime Scottish Steak, delicious burgers and generally a Great chef I love eating there. With a bonus of a friendly owner, staff and gentle vibe every time. It's a nice place to catch a beer with mates, to start a wild night.
Plus it is nearly always my choice for a lazy, lonely dinner on the high street!
Wouldn't agree that this is Stokey's best offering but it certainly is a good one. A really nice little beer garden that makes you feel like you're relaxing in someone's back yard as opposed to off a busy road. The staff here are really nice, and they seem to put quite a lot of emphasis on hiring "people" people. The customers are also nice and I've never known there to be overly drunk people as the crowd is more mature than lots of other places. There is a good range of drinks, and the prices are very competitive for N16. My only criticism is the toilets.
The Daniel Defoe is Stoke Newington''s best pub by a country mile. I know its very popular amongst locals but its also one of those places that you can venture into whatever part of London your coming in from.
