    Lunch with a friend

We have a little deal with a friend of mine, we take eachother for lunch in turns. This time, my friend chose the restaurant, and how well she did! When we arrived I didn't think much of the place, we were upstairs, it was quite crowded, and I didn't know there was more to it. We were then shown downstairs to our table, where i finally had the chance to look around, and realise that i quite like the place. My friend went for one of her usuall dishes, I, however, had a struggle through the menu, as everything seemed so tempting. I don't even remember the exct name of my chosen one, but it was delicious for sure. We also had some 'magnifique' desert, and a little entertainment from the waiter... I will most probably visit again. Well done guys!

    Homa, Church Street

Three of us went on impulse to eat at Homa midweek. The decor upstairs is quite minimal and unfussy and it was quite quiet in terms of customer noise (which in some places recently I've found quite unbearable). At some point I found myself listening to really cool music; very nice. And then there was the food....I had the calves' liver (I don't think it's actually more than one calf but otherwise the spelling looks wrong -sorry, that's the pedant, not the gourmet in me speaking!) which was delicious. Likewise the other two mains: rib-eye steak and crab pasta. We'd decided against starters but could't resist the desserts - can you believe chocolate aubergine with limoncello mousse? It was good, though not quite as scrumptious as the chocolate fondant and the honey and almond parfait (everyone must love this parfait!). House red was good, too, and the waiter who started a little cool, I thought, warmed up over the course of the meal.
Not cheap, but a quality meal in a nice venue.

    A step up from Booths!

We had a really lovely meal here a while ago - great food and wine, good atmosphere and really friendly staff. The owners of Homa have got it spot on. The space is really well designed - you have a choice of the open-plan first floor, which feels like fine dining, or the slightly cosier downstairs with a view in to the busy kitchen.
The waiting staff offered recommendations which was really helpful because everything on the menu sounded good, and they were chatty without being imposing. Mains were delicious, and generous portion sizes too. I would highly recommend the organic sauvignon blanc which is the best house white wine I've had in a long time. As mentioned, the prices are slightly steeper than some other options on Church St but it's well worth it.

    My new favourite

My new favourite in Stokey, without a doubt. Went here a couple of weeks ago, finally, and it outdid my expectations by a mile. The decor is great, and very spacious over two floors. The top floor seems to be more mellow and the bottom more buzzing although when we went both were still pretty chilled and there was no noise issue. The waitress who greeted us was chatty and professional, and asked us where we wanted to sit having shown us both floors, rather than just plonking us anywhere like they sometimes do. When seated manager came over and chatted to us for a bit, though it didn't seem staged or fake but really like he wanted to have a chinwag, and I questioned him about what was good on the menu. He talked us through things and my friend went for the pheasant and I chose the steak which came highly recommended. Quite right too, as it was beautiful. While we waited we had a jerusalem artichoke soup which was creamy and divine. The mains were gorgeous and the chef came over to collect our plates at the end of the meal and we had some fun banter with him. Unfortunately we didn't sample the desserts, partly because my friend is dairy intolerant and there wasn't much option for her and also because we were full up. Very good restaurant with top marks for location, setting, service and food. Not the cheapest place on Church Street but you get plenty of bang for your buck so do check it out. Well done on making your mark on Stokey, guys..
